These hand knit storage bins are all hand made with cotton that has been naturally dyed in Banaue, Ifugao using native leaves, fruits and even mud from the rice terraces. It is our first foray into natural dyes and the colors that have been created are truly stunning - dusty rose, taupe and dark grey.
Because natural dyes have been used, please note that there may be slight differences in shades or slight imperfections in the dye. Please avoid leaving these in direct sunlight, as the colors may fade.
The bins come are knit in 2 different stitches - the classic "Cable" stitch and the "Winnowing Basket Weave" (which reminds us of the baskets or the "bilao" used for winnowing rice). These have all been knit by hand and finished by hand using canvas lining and leather handles.

Hand knit with love by a mama who also plants rice in the rice terraces (take a look at the P20 bill to see what they look like).
Knitting Expedition was begun as a way to provide supplementary income for the women of Uhaj, Ifugao to maintain the rice terraces. Instead of leaving their ancestral lands to find better paying jobs, the income from the sales of the products allows them to stay and tend to the rice terraces that are not only an awe-inspiring legacy of their town but also of the Philippines, and which has provided sustenance for generations of their families. The brand Knitting Expedition also signifies the journey of founders, Candy and Aueeie, as knitters and the distance that the hand-knit products have to travel to make it to your homes.
